My Review

This is the second book I read by Ivy Noelle Weir and I really enjoyed it. It is a modern retelling of Anne of Green Gables in a graphic novel form.
This time Anne is in West Philadelphia where she finds new friends and a new family that she wasn't expecting.
The art style is really beautiful and it matches really well with the story. I liked the turn the story took and I also enjoyed the character development.

Rating: 4 Stars

About the book:

Anne of Green Gables with a twist: in this follow-up to Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy and The Secret Garden on 81st Street, this full-color graphic novel moves Anne Shirley to modern-day West Philadelphia, where where she finds new friends, new rivals, and a new family.

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to foster a teenage girl for the first time, their lives are changed forever. Their redheaded foster daughter, Anne Shirley, is in search of an exciting life and has decided that West Philly is where she’s going to find it. Armed with a big personality and unstoppable creativity, Anne takes her new home by storm as she joins the robotics club, makes new friends in Diana and Gilbert, experiences first love, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier - A review

“We are not promised a long life, Cassia. Just a life. Take what happiness you can. Hold tight to it.”

Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier is a standalone YA fantasy that was published in November 2021.

I read it as part of the Fairyloot monthly read along and I loved it.
I didn't have high hopes for it but thankfully it surprised me and became a 5 star read for me. All the plot twists made it even more gripping and I kept turning the pages.
I loved the characters and the writing style and I wish it had a sequel, so I could spend more time with the characters. I loved how the relationship between Cas and Lena evolved. It seemed natural and not rushed.

Rating: 5 Stars

About the book:

The past never forgets . . .

Before an ambush by enemy soldiers, Lord Cassia was an engineer's apprentice on a mission entrusted by the king. But when plague sweeps over the land, leaving countless dead and devastating the kingdom, even Cas’ title cannot save him from a rotting prison cell and a merciless sickness.

Three years later, Cas wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors. But home is not what he remembers. His castle has become a refuge for the royal court. And they have brought their enemies with them.

When an assassin targets those closest to the queen, Cas is drawn into a search for a killer…one that leads him to form an unexpected bond with a brilliant young historian named Lena. Cas and Lena soon realize that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why. They must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secret—one that could threaten the kingdom’s newfound peace and plunge it back into war.

Blind Bake by Denise Grover Swank - Book Tour

Blind Bake, an all-new slow burn romance mystery filled with chemistry and witty humor from New York Times bestselling author Denise Grover Swank is live now!

The first book in a new humorous romance mystery series by Denise Grover Swank.

Maddie

In the last few months, my life has gone to crap. My uncle died. I gave up my life to move back to my hometown to take care of my ailing aunt. And oh…I unwittingly drove a guy to his murder. Not exactly a stellar restart.

But things just keep getting worse, because the sexy-as-hell, yet stick-up-his-butt homicide detective in charge of solving the case thinks I had something to do with it, and he won't leave me alone.

Even more concerning? It turns out the victim was one of the last people to see my mother alive before her unsolved murder eighteen years ago.

Noah

I left a big city police department for a fresh start in a smaller town. Less crime. Less murder. But three months later, I’ve been handed the murder investigation of the most hated man in town. The list of potential suspects is as long as Santa’s naughty list, but one name keeps popping up.

Maddie Baker.

She’s infuriating as hell, but is she a cold-blooded murderer? My instincts tell me no, yet I can’t exactly trust those. The last time I let myself presume someone was innocent, I ended up with a bullet wound and a broken heart.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in her own mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Gilded (Gilded #1) by Marissa Meyer - A review

"All magic comes at a price, but love was never part of the bargain . . ."

Gilded by Marissa Meyer is a YA Fantasy book that is also a retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale. It is also the first book in the Gilded duology (I believe). The book was published in November 2021.

I read it as part of the #btww read along on Instagram  and I really enjoyed it. It was dark and also whimsical and atmospheric.
The main character wasn't my favourite but that didn't stop me from liking the book. I liked how Marissa Meyer told her version of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale including some extra tales such as the Erlking. Even though I knew the story I really enjoyed it and was really surprised at some points.
One thing that I didn't like was that it got pretty slow at some point in the middle and I believe that it could have been a little bit shorter.
I will of course read the sequel, Cursed, which will come out later in 2022.

Rating: 4 Stars

About the book:

Cursed by the god of lies, a miller's daughter has developed a talent for storytelling - but are all of her tales as false as they appear?

When one of Serilda's stories draws the attention of the devastating Erlking, she finds herself swept away into a world of enchantment, where ghouls prowl the earth, and ravens track her every move. The king locks Serilda in a castle dungeon and orders her to spin straw into gold, or be killed for lying. In despair, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious young man to her aid. And he agrees to help her, for a price. But love wasn't meant to be part of the bargain.

A compulsive read, and as bewitchingly good as you'd expect from a YA bestselling author. You will stay up all night reading this.

See you in the next post and don't forget to keep reading!!!

2022 New Releases Weekly - February 22nd

 Hello everyone!!

Well, it's time for this week's new releases post. This time we look at books published in the week of February 22nd. There are a lot of books that are in my most anticipated list, but as I said before this list is of course incomplete as it includes only books that I am interested in and the majority of them are in the Fantasy genre.

Let's start...

League of Liars by Astrid Scholte

In this fantasy thriller, four teens charged with murder and the illegal use of magic band together to devise the ultimate jailbreak. Perfect for fans of Six of Crows and How to Get Away with Murder.

Ever since his mother was killed, seventeen-year-old Cayder Broduck has had one goal--to see illegal users of magic brought to justice. People who carelessly use extradimensional magic for their own self-interest, without a care to the damage it does to society or those around them, deserve to be punished as far as Cayder is concerned. Because magic always has a price. So when Cayder lands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to apprentice under a premier public defender, he takes it. If he can learn all the tricks of public defense, the better he'll be able to dismantle defense arguments when he's a prosecutor. Then he'll finally be able to make sure justice is served.

But when he meets the three criminals he's supposed to defend, it no longer seems so black and white. They're teenagers, like him, and their stories are . . . complicated, like his. Vardean, the prison where Cayder's new clients are incarcerated, also happens to be at the very heart of the horrible tear in the veil between their world and another dimension--where all magic comes from.

League of Liars is a dark and twisty mystery set in a richly-drawn world where nothing is as it seems, rife with magic, villains and danger.

The Justice of Kings (Empire of the Wolf #1) by Richard Swan

The Justice of Kings, the first in a new epic fantasy trilogy, follows the tale of Sir Konrad Vonvalt, an Emperor’s Justice – a detective, judge and executioner all in one. As he unravels a web of secrets and lies, Vonvalt discovers a plot that might destroy his order once and for all – and bring down the entire Empire.

As an Emperor's Justice, Sir Konrad Vonvalt always has the last word. His duty is to uphold the law of the empire using whatever tools he has at his disposal: whether it's his blade, the arcane secrets passed down from Justice to Justice, or his wealth of knowledge of the laws of the empire. But usually his reputation as one of the most revered—and hated—Justices is enough to get most any job done.

When Vonvalt investigates the murder of a noblewoman, he finds his authority being challenged like never before. As the simple case becomes more complex and convoluted, he begins to pull at the threads that unravel a conspiracy that could see an end to all Justices, and a beginning to lawless chaos across the empire.

About the book:

As a human girl, Chloe’s natural resistance to iron is the only thing that can save her older sister and all of Faerie from a bloodthirsty group of mortals. But Chloe knows the dangers of Faerie all too well. She’d rather become her town apothecary, stay safe, and settle down with a nice, mortal young man.
When it becomes clear Chloe is their only chance, she nervously heads to Faerie. It’s just as mystical and as lethal as she remembers. She’s given a special magic that has never been allowed to mortals before. It doesn’t help that she has to touch the irritatingly handsome fae, Quintus, to use it.
Even worse, the bloodthirsty mortals are more powerful than anyone expected. To fuel them, they have weapons, flames, and revenge. They won’t stop until they control every court in Faerie.
With the weight of the conflict on her shoulders, Chloe realizes the nasty mortals could defeat even her…if they find out her darkest secret. She could lose her sister, her family in the mortal realm, but even worse, she might be losing her heart.

If you like the rich world building of Throne of Glass, the enemies to lovers romance of Once Upon a Broken Heart, and the mythical creatures and twisty plot of The Cruel Prince, then you’ll devour Kay L. Moody’s breathtaking new young adult epic fantasy series.

The Pariah ( Covenant of Steel #1) by Anthony Ryan - A Review

“All ambition is folly when it fails to be matched by reason.”

The Pariah by Anthony Ryan is an adult epic fantasy book that is the first in the Covenant of Steel trilogy. The book was published on February 2022 in the UK .

Disclaimer: I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book by Netgalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The Pariah was different from what I usually read and I really liked it.
We follow Alwyn Scribe and learn his adventures through his POV as he is narrating his story much later in time.
I enjoyed the writing style and kind of medieval setting of the story. It is not action-packed but slow-paced and it reads like a historical fiction at times. Its main themes are religion, justice and freedom.
Our main character Alwyn is one you will definitely like and root for. He is smart and efficient. I enjoyed the side characters as well.
I would loved it more if it had more fantasy elements but I believe this will happen in the next books of the trilogy.

The second book The Martyr comes out later this year.

Rating: 4 Stars

About the book:

Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army.

Fighting under the command of Lady Evadine Courlain, a noblewoman beset by visions of a demonic apocalypse, Alwyn must survive war and the deadly intrigues of the nobility if he hopes to claim his vengeance. But as dark forces, both human and arcane, gather to oppose Evadine's rise, Alwyn faces a choice: can he be a warrior, or will he always be an outlaw?
