The idea for Caesar’s visit to our world occurred to Megan Edwards when she first visited the Getty Villa in the hills above
Malibu back when she was a classics major at Scripps College and had just returned from a semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome and a summer at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. What would a real ancient Roman think? she wondered.
This question became her go-to mental challenge whenever she
had time to ruminate. She kept on thinking over the fifteen years she spent teaching Latin, and she continued after a wildfire destroyed her house and all her worldly possessions. Seizing the opportunity her sudden “stufflessness” offered, Megan spent six years as a nomad on the highways and byways of North America.
In 1999, shortly after the publication of her first book, she started writing this one. Megan soon realized that while her former life had given her some insight into Caesar’s world, she knew almost nothing about Cassandra’s hometown beyond the ubiquitous stereotypes. Because her peripatetic lifestyle made it easy, she travelled to southern Nevada, where she believed she would stay, oh, a month at the most. She’s still there, two decades later. And while she will agree that Las Vegas can’t yet be called an eternal city, she now also knows it wasn’t built in a day. She hopes she captured her adopted hometown accurately in these pages as much as she hopes her portrayal of Julius Caesar rings true.
