Bridge of Souls (Cassidy Blake #3) by Victoria Schwab - A Review

Hello everyone!!

Today we are reviewing Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab which is the third book in her Cassidy Blake series. It is a middle grade fantasy book that was released in March 2021 by Scholastic Press.

This is the finale to the trilogy and this time we are exploring the haunted New Orleans and try to defeat a messenger of Death with Cassidy and her friends.
I liked Bridge of Souls  more than the previous two. Friendship is the major theme in this one and I really liked that. The setting of New Orleans is really atmospheric and goes perfectly with the story.
I will definitely miss Cassidy, Jacob and Lara and I hope we'll get to see more of them in the future.

Highly recommend it!

Rating: 5 Stars

About the book:
Where there are ghosts, Cassidy Blake follows ... unless it's the other way around?

Cass thinks she might have this ghost-hunting thing down. After all, she and her ghost best friend, Jacob, have survived two haunted cities while travelling for her parents' TV show.

But nothing can prepare Cass for New Orleans, which wears all of its hauntings on its sleeve. In a city of ghost tours and tombs, raucous music and all kinds of magic, Cass could get lost in all the colourful, grisly local legends. And the city's biggest surprise is a foe Cass never expected to face: a servant of Death itself.

Cass takes on her most dangerous challenge yet...

Tunnel of Bones (Cassidy Blake #2) by Victoria Schwab - A Review

Hello everyone!!

Today we are reviewing Tunnel of Bones by Victoria Schwab. This is a middle grade fantasy , that is the second book in the Cassidy Blake series. The book was published in 2019 by Scholastic.

The second book in the series takes place in Paris where Cassidy's parents are filming their TV show about the world's most haunted cities. When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghost hunter and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger. And if Cass fails, the force she's unleashed could haunt the city forever.

I really enjoyed reading Cassidy's adventures and explore some part of the haunted Paris with her. As always I loved Victoria's writing and how she set up the story. This one is darker and a little bit spookier than the first book, City of Ghosts. The stakes here are higher and the enemy is stronger.
As far as characters go, I love the friendship dynamics between Cassidy and Jacob and I really liked learning more about him. There is also an appearance of a character from book 1 that I really liked.

I highly recommend it and I am off to read book 3 , Bridge of Souls, now!

See you in the next post and don't forget to keep reading!!!

This is kind of a retelling for the Secret Garden but in a graphic novel form and brought to our times.
It tackled serious issues such as anxiety and depression very good and managed to get through positive messages.
I also loved the illustrations

City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake #1) by Victoria Schwab - A Review

 Hello everyone!!

Today we are reviewing City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab which the first book in the Cassidy Blake trilogy and it was published in 2018 by Scholastic Press.

This book was on my tbr from the day it was released and three years later I finally read it and I can say with certainty that I really liked it. It is a middle grade fantasy / paranormal novel from my favourite author.
I liked Cassidy's story and her "gift" as well as her friendship with Jacob. I loved that the book is set in Edinburgh and all the history bits that includes and of course Victoria's writing style made it even better.

The only bad thing is that now I want desperately to go to Edinburgh!!

If you like ghost stories that are not so spooky I highly recommend this one, especially at this time of the year.

The Last Shadow Warrior by Sam Subity - A Review & Book Tour

Hello everyone!!

Today I am really excited to participate in the book tour for The Last Shadow Warrior by Sam Subity , that is organized by TBR and Beyond Tours.

Disclaimer: I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.

The Last Shadow Warrior is a middle grade fantasy book that was published on May 4th 2021 by Scholastic Press.

My Review

This book was really good. It is a middle grade fantasy book that combines Norse Mythology in it which makes it even better.
I enjoyed the setting of the book and the story. It is a great adventure with many humorous scenes. It is also fast-paced. Abby is a really good character. She is smart and decisive and I loved the friendship dynamics of the three protagonists.
If you like Rick Riordan books I believe you will like this one too.

Rating: 4 Stars

Synopsis of the book

Content Warnings: Main characters’s mother has died four years earlier and her father is critically injured and hospitalized for most of the book.

Twelve-year-old Abby Beckett is proud to come from a long line of elite Viking warriors known as the Aesir. She’s spent her entire life training to hunt the horrific creatures known as Grendels – the ancient foe of the Aesir – just like her mother did before she died. But there’s just one, small problem: No one has seen a Grendel in centuries, and the Viking Council wants to disband the Aesir . . . forever.
When her father is injured in an attack that leaves him in a coma, Abby is forced to take refuge at Vale Hall, a mysterious school in Minnesota where nothing is quite as it seems. She soon discovers the tables have turned and a Grendel is hunting her, but when she tries to alert the Viking Council, they accuse her of making up stories for attention . . . just like her mother did.
Desperate to protect her father and clear her mother’s name, Abby goes on a dangerous quest to discover the truth–a journey that brings her face-to-face with some unlikely foes, including a Ping-Pong-playing sea monster with a wicked backhand, and a dark Valkyrie with a fondness for bingo. Abby quickly realizes that someone at the school is trying to stop her progress and destroy the Aesir for good. And only she can unravel the sinister plot before it’s too late.

About the Author:

Sam Subity loves writing stories that explore the magic and wonder of being a kid and is thrilled to share his writing with readers everywhere—both the young in age and the young at heart.
When he’s not writing, you might find him running the trails of northern California where the endless, winding miles past fog and ocean inspire stories of adventure and mystery.
Or he might be mowing his lawn. Because that’s what adults sometimes have to do.
But in either case, Sam Subity is very likely imagining himself fighting mythical creatures or at the prow of a dragon ship feeling the wind and sea spray on his face alongside his own Viking queen and their two Vikelets. His greatest hope is that in reading his books, you too may be transported to another place where, for a little while, you can exchange the ordinary for the extraordinary.

Hello everyone!!

I am so excited to be part of the City of Gold book tour that is organized by Literary Bound Tours. The City of Gold is the second book in the Eleanor Mason's Literary Adventures series by Nikki Mitchell with the first one being Nightshade Forest (you can check out my review here).

It is a middle grade portal fantasy book that released on March 30th 2021 by Poison Apple Press.
You can purchase the book on Amazon here.

Synopsis of the book

Sometimes a magic portal can be found in ordinary things. That’s exactly what Eleanor Mason discovers when she receives a tattered book of stories from her father.

After her first adventure in the Nightshade Forest, Eleanor quickly jumps through the portal again, only to find herself standing in a field of golden wheat. When a nervous rabbit asks her to save the city from an evil imp with a magic spinning wheel, Eleanor knows she must join him on an epic adventure to solve a riddle, destroy the wheel, and save the townspeople—all before the sun rises on the city.

Can Eleanor rely on the prophecy of an ancient fairy statue to save the day, or will she run out of time and watch as her friends slowly turn to gold?

My review

The second book of Eleanor Mason's Literary Adventures was as enjoyable as the first one. It is a magical book that reads like a fairytale.
In this one we follow Eleanor in a new adventure from her book where she tries to save another magical place.
I really like the author's writing and ow at the end of the book she left the door open for more stories as well as for more information about Eleanor's magical fairytale book.

Rebel Girls Lead : 25 Tales of Powerful Women by Rebel Girls - A Mini Review

Hello everyone!!
Today we are reviewing a book that is coming out tomorrow, January 26th. The book is of course Rebel Girls Lead: 25 Tales of Powerful Women by Rebel Girls and I was lucky enough to read an eARC of it thanks to the publisher (Rebel Girls) and Netgalley.

It is a non-fiction book for middle grade readers. In this book Rebel Girls gathered 25 incredible and inspiring stories of women who are leaders in politics, business, sports, activism and more. It is written like a fairy tale which is perfect for the young readers.
I have previously read books by Rebel Girls like the Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls and had loved everyone of them. This one focuses more on leadership and it was no exception.
The choices of women were perfect. It's a combination of old ones (from previous Rebel Girls books) and new ones and every story has a gorgeous illustration by a female artist to accompany it.
It is also very diversified and I appreciate that.

I highly recommend it for the young readers in your lives and why not, older ones too.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a book by the amazing storyteller Roald Dahl and was published in 1964. Roald Dahl knows how to tell you a story and he does it very very well every time.

The way Roald Dahl describes everything in the Willy Wonka chocolate factory is incredible. You just feel like you are in there and you want to touch everything.
I have read Roald Dahl books before but this one I hadn't read and I knew the story only from the movie, which helped me visualize what I was reading.

Obviously the Oompa Loompas are my favourite. Charlie and his Grandpa were perfect. They were humble and sweet, and Willy Wonka himself was lovely and I liked how sarcastic he was.

Rating: 5 Stars

Synopsis from Goodreads

Big Ideas for Little Philosophers... by Duane Armitage (Series Review)

Hello everyone!!

You will have probably figured out by now that I like to read children's books and especially picture books. They hold a special place in my heart and I see it also as a research for my little one.

Browsing the catalogs of Edelweiss + for books I stumbled across this picture book series. It's a non-fiction series with the very interesting title Big Ideas for Little Philosophers. It is written by Duane Armitage and illustrated byMaureen McQuerry & Robin Rosenthal. It is published by G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers and so far the series has four picture books. The books will release on July 7th 2020.

It's an exciting board book series that asks deep questions in a wonderfully accessible way. Even little children have big questions about life and these books try to answer them is a simple and understandable way. Also the illustrations accompanying the books are very beautiful.

The four titles in the series are:

Truth with Socrates

Socrates believed being truthful and asking questions about the world can make us wise, and Truth with Socrates brings his philosophy to the youngest thinkers. From the importance of being honest even if it's hard or makes you scared to always asking questions to understand more about everything around you, this book will lead to inspiring conversations about human dynamics between people of all ages.

Equality with Simone de Beauvoir

Simone de Beauvoir focused much of her work on the concept of equality, insisting that girls and boys and women and men should have the same opportunities to be happy. Everyone should have the right to be themselves and be treated with respect no matter what. Kids will come away from this book encouraged to think about how the same things can make girls and boys happy or sad or excited, and everyone should listen to who they are on the inside and respect that in others.

Happiness with Aristotle

Finding happiness is a lifelong goal and Aristotle thought deeply about it. Why are we here? What is the best way to live a happy life? Having friends who are fun and adventurous is important, but it's also important to have true friends who will help us be good people and tell us when we're straying from that. He also believed we have to love ourselves in order to love others and be happy. This book will prompt readers to concentrate on what makes them happy and how they can be a good friend to others and themselves.

Imagination with Rene Descartes

Imaginations are unique to every human on earth and Rene Descartes believed that is what makes every person their own true self. By thinking about what we imagine and how all people imagine differently, kids can work on understanding others' perspectives and points of view and become more empathetic. Imagination with Rene Descartes will help them see how using your imagination makes you "you" and understanding the same about friends and family is an important part of getting along in a community.

I highly recommend to check those picture books out. They are perfect for every little reader out there!

Book tour: Σιλβερεϊκ της Αναστασίας Σκουλή (A Review)

Στην πόλη της Σίλβερεϊκ, ένα αγόρι περιπλανιέται εγκαταλελειμμένο. Ο Άλεν, πέφτοντας στα χέρια του υποκόσμου, θα μάθει με τον πιο άσχημο τρόπο τη σκληρότητα των ανθρώπων και το βάρος που φέρουν τα συμφέροντα των ισχυρών. Έτσι, θα «εμπλουτιστεί» με τρομακτικές εμπειρίες και, ταυτόχρονα, θα γίνει μέλος μιας ιδιότυπης οικογένειας. Θα καταφέρει ο Άλεν να φτιάξει τη ζωή του ή θα τον στοιχειώνουν, για πάντα, τα φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος του;

1.Τι να περιμένουμε από εσάς στο μέλλον;

2.Πως σας ήρθε η έμπνευση γι' αυτό το βιβλίο;

3.Γιατί επιλέξατε να απευθυνθείτε στο εφηβικό κενό;

5.Ξέρατε από την αρχή τον τρόπο που θα τελείωνε το βιβλίο;

6.Δυστοπία ή Ουτοπία; Πιστεύετε ότι η Δυστοπία μπορεί να εξελιχθεί σε ουτοπία;

7.Πόσες ώρες την ημέρα γράφετε;

8.Πώς αποφασίσατε να ασχοληθείτε με το είδος της δυστοπίας;

9.Είχατε σκεφτεί ένα διαφορετικό τέλος; Αν ναι, θα ήταν δυνατό να μας το πείτε;

10.Πιστεύετε ότι ο Άλεν είναι ένας σύγχρονος χαρακτήρας που αντιμετωπίζει όλα όσα θα μπορούσαν να συμβούν σε κάποιον τη σημερινή εποχή;

The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin - A mini review

Today we are talking about a children's book from the famous author George R. R. Martin, who we all know from his series A Song of Ice and Fire.
This book is called The Ice Dragon and it is his only children's book, if I am not mistaken. It was written in 1980 and illustrated by Luis Royo.

According to the synopsis, The Ice Dragon is an enchanting tale of courage and sacrifice for young readers and adults. Lavish illustrations enrich this captivating and heartwarming story of a young girl and her dragon.
In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire the ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember. Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara's home. And only a winter child—and the ice dragon who loved her—could save her world from utter destruction.

It is a beautiful and  atmospheric story with gorgeous illustrations, that complement the story and the theme of the book perfectly. It is a well written book with magical descriptions. The ending leaves you with an impactful and symbolic message.

If you love dragons and GRRM you should read this book, even if you are not a child.

I read the greek version of the book, translated by Eirini Paidousi for Metaixmio Publications.

Children & Middle Grade Book Recommendations

Rowling.

Ένα δικό μου πολυαγαπημένο είναι το The Little Prince του  Antoine de Saint Exupery,  όπου βλέπουμε την ιστορία του Μικρού Πρίγκηπα στο ταξίδι του από πλανήτη σε πλανήτη μέχρι τη γη.

Επόμενη σειρά βιβλίων είναι το His dark materials του Philip Pullman με την πρωταγωνίστρια μας Lyra.
