Book tour: Σιλβερεϊκ της Αναστασίας Σκουλή (A Review)

Στην πόλη της Σίλβερεϊκ, ένα αγόρι περιπλανιέται εγκαταλελειμμένο. Ο Άλεν, πέφτοντας στα χέρια του υποκόσμου, θα μάθει με τον πιο άσχημο τρόπο τη σκληρότητα των ανθρώπων και το βάρος που φέρουν τα συμφέροντα των ισχυρών. Έτσι, θα «εμπλουτιστεί» με τρομακτικές εμπειρίες και, ταυτόχρονα, θα γίνει μέλος μιας ιδιότυπης οικογένειας. Θα καταφέρει ο Άλεν να φτιάξει τη ζωή του ή θα τον στοιχειώνουν, για πάντα, τα φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος του;

1.Τι να περιμένουμε από εσάς στο μέλλον;

2.Πως σας ήρθε η έμπνευση γι' αυτό το βιβλίο;

3.Γιατί επιλέξατε να απευθυνθείτε στο εφηβικό κενό;

5.Ξέρατε από την αρχή τον τρόπο που θα τελείωνε το βιβλίο;

6.Δυστοπία ή Ουτοπία; Πιστεύετε ότι η Δυστοπία μπορεί να εξελιχθεί σε ουτοπία;

7.Πόσες ώρες την ημέρα γράφετε;

8.Πώς αποφασίσατε να ασχοληθείτε με το είδος της δυστοπίας;

9.Είχατε σκεφτεί ένα διαφορετικό τέλος; Αν ναι, θα ήταν δυνατό να μας το πείτε;

10.Πιστεύετε ότι ο Άλεν είναι ένας σύγχρονος χαρακτήρας που αντιμετωπίζει όλα όσα θα μπορούσαν να συμβούν σε κάποιον τη σημερινή εποχή;

Book series : The ones I've finished

If you asked me what do you prefer, standalone books  or book series, I would probably say book series. As much as I enjoy reading a standalone and know how the story concludes, it is much better to know that there is more to this world, more stories and things to explore.

In the most recent years of my reading life, I managed to finish some series and among them are ones that have become my all time favorites. As you will probably know the majority of the books I read are fantasy and that is reflected on the list below.

Let's see them together (in no particular order)...

The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling

This is a no-brainer. Harry Potter is a series I have read and reread and I will probably read again multiple times in the future.

If you live under a rock and you do not know, this is about orphan Harry who learns he is a wizard on his 11th birthday when Hagrid escorts him to magic-teaching Hogwarts School. As a baby, his mother's love protected him and vanquished the villain Voldemort, leaving the child famous as "The Boy who Lived". With his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry has to defeat the returned "He Who Must Not Be Named".

It consists of seven books.

Shades of Magic Series by V. E. Schwab

This is one of my all time favorite series (along with the next one) and I am so happy that there will be more books in this world.

If you do not know this is about Kell who is one of the last Antari―magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. Officially he serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador. Unofficially he’s a smuggler, an occupation through which Kell is tricked into unleashing dark magic across the Londons. Can he prevent the same fate that befell Black London?

The series consists of three books and if you want to learn more you can check out my review here

Caraval Series by Stephanie Garber

This is the other all time favorite I was talking about.

It is about two sisters, Scarlett and Tella Dragna who have never left the tiny island where they live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic.

If you want to know more you can check out my reviews of Caraval and Legendary here and here.

The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

This is a very hyped sci-fi YA book series that I read and fortunately I really liked.

Each book in The Illuminae Files focuses on two new teens (a male/female) experiencing a different aspect of the same invasion. The trilogy is united by a report which documents the occurrences from each duo’s point of view.
This summary doesn't do justice to the books but you have to read them for yourselves.

If you want to know more you can check my review of the series here

Assassin's Creed Series by Oliver Bowden

For me this is an underrated series.  The books are based on the famous Ubisoft game and I really really like them. In my opinion you should read the first four books in order and the others in any order you like.

I have a full review for the eight books that are written by Oliver Bowden and you can check it here.

The Cemetery of Forgotten books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

I haven't read anything like these books. They are historical fiction but there is something in the way Zafon writes that makes them magical.
The first book The Shadow of the Wind is about Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julian Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written.

You can check out the full review I have for the series here.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

I read these books as an adult but I still loved them. Philip Pullman is an amazing storyteller and everything he writes is beautiful.
His Dark Materials is an epic trilogy of fantasy novels  consisting of Northern Lights (published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. It follows the coming of age of two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they wander through a series of parallel universes.

If you want to know more you can check my review of the series here.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis

This is another series that I read as an adult and I liked them but I believe that I would liked them more as child.
The books are full of journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil. What else would you need?

You can check out the full review I have for the series here.

These are all the series that I have finished until now but I hope I will add more to this list.
If you want to know which ones, I will have pretty soon another post about the series I want to read and I have on my selves.

See you in the next post and don't forget to keep reading!!!

Το βιβλίο Εγκληματα στην Αθήνα είναι το πρώτο μιας τετραλογίας αλυσιδωτών αστυνομικών υποθέσεων με κεντρικό άξονα τη δυνατή φιλία ανάμεσα στις δυο ηρωίδες Μελίνα και Ερωφίλη. Μπορούν αλήθεια δυο κορίτσια να επιβιώσουν στο σκληρό κόσμο του εγκλήματος;

1.Γιατί επέλεξες την Αθήνα ως τόπο εξέλιξης της πλοκής σου;

2.Τι σε ώθησε να ξεκινήσεις να γράφεις αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα; Για παράδειγμα γιατί όχι ένα τρόμου ή συναισθηματικό;

3. Τόσο ο κόσμος του εγκλήματος, όσο και του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος/διηγήματος είναι ανδροκρατούμενος. Νομίζεις ότι μπορεί να αλλάξει αυτό;

4. Ποιοί είναι οι αγαπημένοι σου συγγραφείς;

7. Οι γυναίκες στα περισσότερα αστυνομικά βιβλία είναι τα θύματα. Τι σε έκανε να χρησιμοποιήσεις ως ηρωίδες γυναίκες;

8.Έχεις αντιμετωπίσει δυσκολίες στον κλάδο σου εξαιτίας του φύλου σου; Ποια είναι η αντιμετώπιση;

10. Γιατί αστυνομικό;

11.Κατά την γνώμη σου πότε ένα βιβλίο είναι έτοιμο να εκδοθεί;

12.Αν σου ζητούσαν να γίνει το βιβλίο σου ταινία θα δεχόσουν;

13. Σε εμπνέουν οι αστυνομικές υποθέσεις;

14. Από τον τίτλο ακόμα καταλαβαίνει κανείς ό,τι έχεις επιλέξει την Αθήνα ως τοποθεσία για τις αστυνομικές υποθέσεις, υπάρχει κάποιος λόγος που δεν επέλεξες άλλη τοποθεσία;

15. Ποιό ήταν το πρώτο αστυνομικό βιβλίο που διάβασες;

17.Πως μπορεί μια φιλία να μείνει ακλόνητη όταν εμπλέκεται σε ζητήματα ζωής και θανάτου;

18. Γιατι επέλεξες τον δεσμό της φιλίας να ενώνει τις δύο πρωταγωνίστριες;

February 2020 Wrap up

It's time again for another reading monthly wrap up. February is the shortest month of the year but I managed to read 14 books. Most of them were books I read as part of a read-a-long with fellow book lovers and of course there are always my ARCs.

Let's see the books now.

No one is too small to make a difference - Greta Thunberg

The title says it all!
In this book we can read the speeches that Greta Thunberg has given the past couple of years. This young activist from Sweden talks simple but full of passion for a topic so important and critical for our lives: The Climate Crisis.

This one is a twisted Little Red Riding Hood story where little Red becomes little Rude and she is very rude to everyone. On the contrary we have a very kind Bad Wolf. Beautifully illustrated.

Twisted Fairy tales: The Three Little Narwhals - Stewart Ross

This is a very sweet retelling of the Three Little Pigs story. I liked that the story took place underwater because it made it different from the original. It has also beautiful illustrations.

Shout - Laurie Halse Anderson

I do not have words for this book. It is a very powerful book and very different from what I usually read. It is a poetic memoir written in free verse by the author of Speak.  In it she talks about rape and sexual assault. It is an important book for any reader and especially those who can relate to #metoo and #timesup movements.

30-second literature: The 50 important forms, genres and styles , each explained in half a minute - Ella Berthoud

These kind of books are right up my alley. I like reading books about books and literature. In this one the author manages to give us all the information we need in only 300 words.  It's a great reference book.

Woven in Moonlight - Isabel Ibanez

This book is different from anything I have read. It is inspired by Bolivian history and politics and it is very well written. I liked the cultural aspects, the magic and of course the food.

Economics in one lesson - Henry Hazlitt

I read the Greek translation of the book.
This book is a classic introduction to the economic theory and liberalism. It defends capitalism and the concept of the free market.
I liked it but it wasn't one of my favorites on the subject.

Rating : 3 Stars

The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K Le Guin

This is the first Le Guin book I read and I really enjoyed it. It's a SF political thriller that turns to an adventure as the story goes. The book has a dynamic plot and a good character development too.

(Crimes in Athens - Ioanna Gelardou)

I read a review copy of this book.
Some parts of the book I really enjoyed and other not at all. I think it will be a good tv show because it is written like one.

I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

These kind of books are right up my alley. I like reading books about books and literature. In this one the author manages to give us all the information we need regarding forms, genres and styles of literature, in texts that are short (around 300 words) but fully understandable.

The book is part of the 30-Second series and it is an introductory guide to literature. It is split into 7 chapters that cover:
The History of Literature – from Sanskrit to Modernism
The Novel – in all its glorious genres
Literary Prose – non-fiction from diaries to philosophies
Poetry – from the sonnet to the haiku
Drama – interesting theatrical forms and genres
Literary Devices – the techniques authors use in their works
Literary Styles – the features and history of different styles of writing

As you can see it covers all the important genres, styles and forms of literature and at the same time gives you examples and further reading material.

It is perfect for anyone that loves books and literature and it is also a great reference book.

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Sun-mi Hwang - A Review

It's been a while since I read this little story and it still makes me a little bit sad when I think about it. I am talking about the book The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Sun-mi Hwang.

This book was originally published in 2000 in Korean and was translated in English in 2013 ( I've read the Greek translation by Dioptra Publications).

In this little book (only 160 pages) we follow a little hen named Sprout. Her dream is to hatch an egg of her own and raise her little chicken. She no longer wants to lay eggs on command. When she finally succeeds then her problems begin. she doesn't find the approval she expected and the dangers for her and her baby are a lot.

The story of Sprout is very beautiful and emotional. As with her other book, The Dog Who Dared to Dream, the author manages to tell us the story with a very unique way that makes it look like a fairy tale. A fairy tale with a deeper meaning.

It is an anthem for freedom, individuality and motherhood featuring a plucky, spirited heroine who rebels against the tradition-bound world of the barnyard. A hen who dares to dream...

Tips to read more books this year

Every year I ask myself the same question.
How many books can I manage to read this year? Could it be more than last year, or less?

In 2019 I barely managed to reach my goal of 100 books and the reasons are many. The most important one is that in the middle of the year our baby girl came to our lives so reading wasn't at the front.  In 2020 I set my goal lower at 52 books, one for every week of the year and so far it is going very well.

I have many friends who ask me how I can read so many books , how I find the time for reading. The simple answer is that you do not find the time, you just simply make time for reading.

I always  liked to read articles with tips and tricks on how to read more books. That's why I decided to gather together in this post some tips that I found very helpful  and try to use in my own reading life. (For full disclosure I didn't think of those tips, I am just gathering them in one post for my and your convenience).

Let's start...

Fist, try to make reading a part of your routine.
Integrate reading time into your routine. You can wake up a little bit earlier to read (I find this one a little difficult, because you know... sleep!) or you can dedicate half an hour before bed to read. That's what I am doing and it's working very well so far. You can also read during your lunch break or with your coffee in the morning.

Second,  try audiobooks.
With audiobooks you can multitask. You can read/listen your book while driving, working out, cleaning or cooking. Do not forget that listening to a book is not cheating. Audiobooks count as books obviously.

Third, always have a book with you either physical or in ebook form.
I think this one is the more helpful tip. You can squeeze some reading while waiting for the bus, at the bank or at the doctor's office.

Fourth, try to mix the genres you read.
This way you won't suffer from book hungover after finishing a great book.  It will help you to avoid direct comparisons between books in the same genre and it will eliminate confusion between similar plot lines or characters.

Fifth, join a book club or buddy read books.
Book clubs are always a great idea because they will encourage you to finish a book by a certain date for your scheduled meeting and if it's a monthly one you will add 12 books towards your goal.
Buddy reading books and discussing what you’re reading with a friend can give you encouragement to read through to the end.

Sixth, read more books at once.
This is one I do all the time. Usually I read three books at once but I try to be of different genres so I won't confuse the plots.

I have a dedicated post for this one. It's an older one. Check it out here.

Seventh, participate in readathons.
Readathons can easily help you to read more. Many bloggers and bookstagrammers host readathons throughout the year, where you read for a set period. Some readathons even come with a theme or book recommendations.

Eighth, dnf (did-not-finish) a book if you don't like it.
Forcing yourself to finish a book you hate is not a good way to reach your reading goals. Sticking with books you’re not enjoying will take all of the fun out of your reading time and will slow down your progress.

These are some tips that I think will help you to read more books this year. I tried them all, except audiobooks  and I find that they do work.  Now I want to try listening to audiobooks as well to see if they suit me.

Have you got any other tips you can share with us?

See you in the next post and don't forget to keep reading!!!

Little People, Big Dreams by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara (Series Review)

Recently while I was browsing Netgalley for new books, I stumbled across this series of non fiction picture books that I though were very interesting. The series in question is Little People, Big Dreams by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and it's published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books.

Told as a story, with a facts and photos section at the back, this best-selling series celebrates triumph over adversity through some of history’s favourite characters.
