I have read the first book in the series A Song Among the Silence and you can find my review of it here

Synopsis:

(For A Song Among the Silence, Book 1, to keep spoilers away!)

Life has never been easy for Derrick. Having been raised among the Nixormans—a species with quick reflexes who pride themselves on being great soldiers—all Derrick wants is to join the human world and finally belong. When Derrick meets a human girl in the forest, he finally takes a stand against his guardian and leaves for the human kingdom. But what he expected is far from what he finds. The human kingdom is suffering from the winter and is bathed in more Darkness than what heimagined.

Being the princess of a suffering kingdom cursed with an eternal winter didn't make Kota Holland's life as grand as it could be. Especially afterher mother dies and her father marries a Dark mage. But when her father becomes ill and her stepmother takes control, Kota will do anything to heal him—even if it means dabbling with Dark magic for a cure.

When a cunning Dark mage enters their lives and offers to fix everything, Derrick and Kota find themselves making an unbreakable deal to get their answers. Failure to uphold their end of the deal and a curse will take their lives.

As Derrick’s and Kota’s lives intertwine, they find the winter growing stronger and the kingdom's resources depleting. Without the answers they seek, more is at stake than just their lives. They risk the entire kingdom’s survival.

One wrong step and everything they’ve worked for will crumble.

A Song Among the Silence by Julie Janis - A Review

"In a poisoned world ruled by Darkness, you are a song among the silence."

A Song Among the Silence by Julie Janis is a YA fantasy debut novel that is the first book in The Rythmist Cycle. The book is already out.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the world - building and I found the magic system very interesting and unique. I really liked the story and I loved the plot twists and tensions.

I liked our main characters, Kota and Derrick and their character development and relationship dynamics. I am also curious to see what will happen to the "villain" of our story Killian. Alfi of course was my favourite of all.

I am really interested to see how the story continues in the next book and whether or not my questions about the world and some of the characters will be answered. Fingers crossed they are.

Rating: 4 Stars

Then Came the Thunder (Three Willows #1) by Rachel Huszar - A Review

The sequel Then Came the Fire is also already out.

I didn't know what to expect from it but it sounded interesting and I enjoyed reading it. It is mainly a historical fiction but the author blends a little fantasy element in it.

We have a strong female protagonist who has faced many struggles with the biggest one being her husband's death during the war.

The story has mystery, drama and some action.

I really liked the relationship dynamics between our characters and especially between Jessalyn and Sam.

One thing that I didn't like was that the revealing of what happened with the livestock was a little rushed in my opinion. It could have been a little longer and more explained.

Rating: 3,5 Stars

About the book:

Jessalyn Joy loves her husband, but she can’t help the feelings that arose when he volunteered for the Union army. When he comes back to her in a box instead of on his feet, those feelings complicate even more.

Jessalyn’s mourning period is cut short when something begins to attack the livestock in their small town, and greater dangers begin to threaten their provincial life. Thrown together with the new reverend, one of her own students, and a strange man somehow related to her husband’s passing, Jessalyn must find a way to stop the evils that threaten her husband’s first and ultimately last home.

Set in the Southwestern home front, Huszar blends a taste of fantasy into a startling down-to-earth world, creating a high stakes adventure for this strong female protagonist and her band of amateur sleuths.

“THE SELECTION” meets “THRONE OF GLASS” in this dark and twisted tale of a deadly bridal competition for the hand of a mysterious shadow king.

It is said that the Neverseen King comes in search of a new bride every hundred years. I thought it was only legend—until he came for me. I am one of twelve assassins forced to compete for the hand of our unseen king, who I’m beginning to doubt is even human at all. Why he needs a bride, much less one who wields a blade, isn’t any of my business. All I’m trying to do is get out of here with my life and my heart intact. I don’t want to care about the mysteries I begin uncovering about the king, about why he never shows his face, about his palace that turns into a nightmare after dusk. I’m just trying to escape. But apparently, my choice is to win this competition or die. I’m not dying. And I’m definitely not falling in love with him.

THE ASSASSIN BRIDE is the first in series story of an assassin and her Neverseen King, perfect for fans of Sylvia Mercedes and Sarah K L Wilson who love dark, swoon-worthy heroes and a sweet (not steamy) slow-burn romance.
