Defy the Night (Defy the Night #1) by Brigid Kemmerer - A review

“A spark of rebellion is all it takes to defy the night.”
― Brigid Kemmerer, Defy the Night

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer is a YA Fantasy book and a 1st book in a series.
This book was on my shelves since its publication and this year I finally managed to read it and I am glad I did.

I like the writing style of the author and the way she writes her characters and world - building. The plot of the book was really interesting too.
We follow Tess and Wes as they try to help their neighbors from the sickness that began ravaging the land, and how they risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most--but it's still not enough.

The story is told through two POVs, Tessa's and Prince Corrick's and we see that everyone is just trying to do what they think is right, even though that means different methods that don't always seem right.
The book has many twists and turns that make this book a fast paced read despite its length. Also, the ending was really good.

All in all, it was an adventurous book, with strong character development and lovable characters.

I will definitely continue with the rest of the series, Defend the Dawn and Destroy the Day (releases on January 23rd).

Rating: 4 Stars

About the book:

The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand.

King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents' shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King's Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion--it's the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere, and the only known cure, an elixir made from delicate Moonflower petals, is severely limited.

Out in the Wilds, apothecary apprentice Tessa Cade is tired of seeing her neighbors die, their suffering ignored by the unyielding royals. Every night, she and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most--but it's still not enough.

As rumors spread that the cure no longer works and sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King's Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible: sneaking into the palace. But what she finds upon her arrival makes her wonder if it's even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first.

See you in the next post and don't forget to keep reading!!!
